Our Mission: Partnering with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and others, Import Peace seeks to foster economic growth opportunities and improve the quality of life for Palestinians living in Palestinian Territories occupied by Israel. The goal is to ease poverty and hardship through the creation of export markets for fair trade products made in Palestine by crafters or farmers.
Olive Trees & Livelihood:As Americans travel to the West Bank they become aware of the central importance of the olive harvest to Palestine's economic well-being. In biblical writings, the olive tree represents peace and life and its oil is the symbol of purity and light. Centuries of cultivating olive trees on hillside terraces has helped Palestinian farmers produce the most distinctive and traditionally-grown olive oils in the world and helped to sustain the economy of the people. Throughout the last decades over 1 million olive trees have been uprooted to build Israeli settlements. This destructive practice continues daily.
Fair Trade: A number of programs work closely with partners in Palestine to promote sales and bring olive food products as well as wood handcrafts to America. They follow fair trade practices which ensure a fair price is paid to provide for the producer's living and family needs, safe working conditions, care for the environment, and equal opportunity for women, without child exploitation. The fair trade movement aims to build healthy, long-term relationships within the production chain for sustainable economic development.
